My filtration seems to be where I want it. Maintenance is pretty simple but I would like to have an easy way to Vac the tank when I need to. I've go Geo's, Rays and Pike that all do a good job churning the sand. I had an Eheim vac that was maybe a 5 on a 1-10 scale - then I learned it wasn't submersible! No real loss. Can come up with something better. I have a few extra pumps, PVC and tubing around. Has anyone come up with a design that they like?

Ok - not a hot topic I guess but here is what I'm thinking today. I'll build or reuse a HOB container with a filter sock in it. I can easily use an external pump with two hoses attached - the return hose will go through the filter sock in the HOB and filtered water will go back into the tank. I'll put a section of PC on the end of a hose on the section side of the pump which will let me vacuum around the tank. I'll have to be careful about what I pick up so I don't have a problem with the impeller but maybe it would work...

I have used an airlift tube. The more air the better. With a elbow at the top, rubber banded too a filter sock.

Half of my tank is blocked with cichlid habitat. I have lots of water flow, to the sump. I have a 3/8" hose taped into the main pump. That I use as a power washer to blow crud into the sump intake.

i dont vac my tanks... lol

water current blows all the gunk and debris to a drilled hole, i just open the valve and drain
then refill then done! lol
