hey guys i got anew canister a few weeks ago and still didnt put much bio media in it yet, only old AC 70 sponges ripped up in little pieces, i was planning on buying the Seachem matrix but i heard it was a waste of money and pot scrubbers are better, are there any other Commercial or DIY media that wont cost much but is also effective? and if its DIY can you guys put up pics on how you use them?

Thanks!:)

While pore size is a consideration, in reality, beneficial bacteria colonize any and all surfaces in the tank, and cover it in biofilm.
I have used lava rock for over 25 years as bio media, and just move some from tank to tank.
I have not had to start a new cycle since starting to use it, in the 80s.

SeaChem matrix has advantages, especially if you want the most conversion in a relatively small space. If you already have other media forms on hand & don't want to go get something else, that's different.
There is a thread or post on forum somewhere comparing the surface area of various medias, including pot scrubbies, but I can't find it.
