diy w/d filter and overflow

I built an overflow out of 1 inch pvc like the ones in other post. It is in a 55gal tank the problem im having is its not keeping up with the retun pump. I have put a valve by the pump to help but the pump still almost runs out of water. would it help to make a overflow out of 1 1/4 or 1 1/2 to help with the water flow?

by the way you guys are great the DIY overflow and w/d filter are great

A 1" drain should be able to hanlde that no problem.
Is it draining to the sump good?
Is that the pump rating or minus head?

At 5 ft it will flow 350 gph. A one inch overflow will handle that with no problem. There is safety in numbers and it will be a good idea to have two anyway, just incase one stops working.

There has to be a flow or prime problem.

i found the problem! yes the flow is great the pump works great. the problem is the hole for the out put of the scrubbies dept. is not tall enough.Which means every once in a while the pump will suck water and make a slurping sound. I thought it was running out of water but in fact it was just covered to the top of the input of the pump.I will take the W/D apart and redesign it.
