I made one from a 31 gallon rubbermaid tote. It is the tallest thing I can fit under my stand.

Do I need to keep a lid on it, or can I just leave it open?

Mine is open with no problems. I do weekly water changes and haven't had a problem. With the larger tubs, you can have more water and adjust the height of your media so you can raise the water level. (room permitted)
My tower is as high as it can go too. I'll get some pics. Look for my thread in a few. I don't want to hijack your thread.
