DIY Water Change Siphon?

I just attempted my first water change on a sand substrate tank, and the siphon wasn't powerful enough to get the waste off of the top of the sand. Otherwise if you know of a way to make a really good DIY siphon, or you know of a good siphon, a reference or a how to would be appreciated.

Aqueon Gravel Siphon comes in 25' or 50'. Works great, hooks up to your sink, just turn on the water to start the siphon then turn off the water. Can adjust flow via the shut off valves. Coils nicely for storage. Comes apart easily for cleaning. I leave mine full of water when finished using so that it is primed and ready to go, also no molding when full.
