Hi,

I was thinking of making own wet/dry filter and want to know the minimum size wet/dry for a 96"x48"x24" acrylic tank. Thankx.

Rule of thumb ... 1/4 to 1/3 of original tank, depending on bio-load.

1/4 of 450g = 110g

1/3 of 450g = 150g

People have had success with smaller, but other factors come into play (special media, higher maintenance, etc).

Why purchase a nice new tank just for a sump? Craigslist is the place you should be checking out, or you could look into cheaper alternatives to just a tank, such as tupperware, plastic drums ect.

I know a new 150 is rather expensive and unnecessary for just a sump.

I have a 100g rubbermade stock tub set up as a wet/dry on my 300 and 125. It works great and I could probably add another tank to it.

Well, he's got a guaranty and it looks pretty.

There are definitely alternatives to a new tank.

Now, how big should the part where the bio material be?
The bigger it is the more bio filtration you have so i say--as big as possible. Just remember 2/3rds dry and 1/3 wet. And alot of people say to use different materials in the same wet/dry. i am going with a sponge section, A scrubbie section, a lava rock/ceranmic ring section, a cut straw section, and a filter section.

Depends on the physical size of the tank, if a rectangle (vs an stock tank type) 2/3 of tank for bio is fine, 1/3 for mechanical and pump return.
