The filter should be at least a quarter of the size of the actual tank. So a 20g would just barely squeeze by, i recommend at least a 30g if you have a high bioload. I suck with sumps but that is all i know about them.

you won't harm your fish if you gonna make your wet dry a bit bigger than what you need ... =] If you got some old tank + some glass or plexiglass sheets you can make one easily

I suggest to make it as big as you can - aka whatever fits under your tank - the bigger the wet dry the more media you can put in there and once your fish grow or you stock the tank with more fish you won't have to do anything to make the filtration better ...

here is my "wet" dry I made outta 33 long ( I believe it's 33 long )

some thin glass sheets to make the filtration chambers + glass cutter + silicone + the tank I found on the street thrown out for garbage and voila ! I got a wet dry :P

my suggestion - the last chamber where the pump will sit - make it relatively big so that when the water will be going tru the little chambers full of filtration media, the pump won't empty the last chamber too early ( oh boy I hope this makes sense ! )

Take care !

Good luck

I use Sterilite 3-drawer desk organizers from Walmart ($4) & cut a hole in the top (inlet), then drill each drawer (drip plates). Easy media changes & no glass/plexi/acrylic or silicone to deal with. They work great.

so I can use any kind of sponges? What about using bio balls?

sorry i didnt get back to you sooner.

you can use any type of sponge of any pouristy or size as long as it dosn't contain soap or chemicals. if you use a pourse sponge youll need to clean it often, because it might clog.
you can use anything for bio media. i now use 720 cut up straws, which are acting like ceramic rings with the same amount of area. you can use bioballs, bottle caps, ceramic rings, straws, scouring pads, sponge, AC filter blocks, fluval foam blocks, jap mat, scubbies, and more.

you chose!
