i have been reading a lot that most ppl just throw in a grip of bio media in there sump and only 1 layer of mechanical filtration padding. just wondering if 1 layer would be fine? or would it be better if i use more mechanical padding. im currently useing pillow cotton but i got about 4 inches thick of it in my sump. just wondering woudl it be better if i keep it like that or use about only 1 inch and replace the 3 inches with pot scrubbers and why?

pot scrubbers good.. they get a lot of bacteria... mechanical filter... i would go with the filter floss, the cotton type is hard on my part. don't do it too thick it might overflow when it is dirty already. go put some sponge filter on the pump going back to the tank, it will make the water clear of dirt.:)

can u do that? attach a sponge filter to ur pump then a tube to ur sponge?

Is this cotton or poly-fil? (ppoly-fil is better, doesn't break-down, less particulate matter for it and cleans up easier).

1" of mechanical filter media is ok, just clean / replace it when it's dirty (don't wait).

The more bio-filtration the better is the usual rule around here, so depending on your bio-load adding more will only help (nice part about it, it doesn't hurt anything).

Why put a sponge filter on filtered water? Sponge filters don't polish water, for that you need a finer filter material.

You can put a sponge filter almost anywhere, the point is, will it be useful...in this case, no.

yes you can. depends on what pump also. my mag drive 18 and lower models have the pre-filter on it when you buy them. but the 24 and 36 i believe the don't come with it. or just customize the pre-filter. go get a pre-filter for the overflow and make a pipe that would go exactly for it, drill the pipe with several holes and you're good to go.:D just make sure you drill big holes, you don't want it having problem sucking the water fast.:)
