Gardena CA.
Im a FlowerHorn Collecter/Breeder/Specialist and FlowerHorn get nicer as they mature.Recently I got into Pike and from my understanding, they get darker and less appealing as they mature...Is this true?

I have a orange Pike and sumone told me it will pretty much be black when its big...is this true?

some species YES most get really dark colors like maroon, grey but some species get vibrant red bellies with white lined fins and yellow, green and blue hues...

depends on species as stated above and truth be told, most pikes get a lot more attractive with age. If you are saying that you have an orange pike, that may be a Xingu I, if it is, and its female then you are going to be very very happy with this fish when mature. Do a search

Agreed, Most Lugurbris get more colorful and striking as they mature. The will go through color changes at around 8-9". There are a few species in which some people will say get more bland like the male Xingu I, but in my opinion even they are a good looking pike with strong red/orange fins and caudal and on olive colored body.

They actually go through color changes alot younger that that.Mine was aquiered at 3.5 inches, had black in it's dorsal, now gone at 6.5.Also,it had no red in it's tail fin when i got it,now it's tail fin is the hue of freshly spilled blood.Oh,and even if it isa Male,i doubt you'll be dissapointed because it will have the biggest appetite of all your fish AND be 14 inches!!MONSTER!

Lugurbris won't hit their mature color stage usually untill sizes I stated earlier.
If it is a Saxatilis species then yes they will hit there color changes at a smaller size.

Thank yoo very much for your info guys...I guess it jus depends on the species...and in the case of my orange pike,I should hope its female but males are good too, right?

Definitely, Females are very good looking, look in the sticky of pike photo shoot or do a search of the threads and you will find some very good looking females or males.
Females will develope a white stripe on the dorsal and a plump red belly. The stripe willstart to develope around the 8" mark.

May i add that these fish take a while to grow and live quite a long time.I've had mine for a year, got him at 3.5 inches,a year later he's arond 7 1/4. I like fish that live long, get real attached, and a big chunky pike does quite the "feed me dance" at the glass.

My 3" pike does that dance too...lol When i drop in a blood worm cube the jardini usually gets it and the pike follows him and jacks worms straight from the Jardini's mouth..hahaha
