I just picked up a 10-11'' ornate and his two little nostrils are missing. im guessing it happened at the previous owners tank because he is a return. but anyways will they grow back after time?
Thanks Zach.

It may take a while though.
One of my first ropefish was missing one. I think it took a couple of years to grow back fully. One of my current ones is the same, missing half of one. Not much regrowth in 3 months.

Wow! A year???? Something you might be doing wrong. Mine only took less than a month to fully grow back the nostril. It happened when I used a styrofoam tp transfer them and they been rubbing the tip of the snout against the styrofoam wall. They started healing in 3-4 days and fully grew back 4 weeks.

I've had a few that lost their nostril tube. For one of them, it never grew back. The others seemed to grow back very slowly.

Weekly 50% water changes, lots of quality food. And they bred in my tank. As far as I can tell from 30+ years of keeping fish, they were looked after extremely well. Even the one now is growing back slowly, but she has put on a couple of inches since I got her about 3 months ago. Every nostril I've seen lost has grown back incredibly slow.

i don't think anyone's doing anything wrong. nostrils may or may not grow back. Also in some cases, it doesn't grow back in the beginning, but down the road something must have triggered the regrowth, and all of a sudden it starts growing back.

hmmm I remember one of my bichir lost his nostril, but it grew back in a few weeks.
