Odd question, I know, but bichirs have a modified set of lungs and do have the ability to be out of the water as long as they are wet. So... does anyone know if they make noise? I have heard of fish that do and I am a little curious!

There's has been studies and claims that a couple polys have made sound. It mentions it somewhere in the stickies. I'm not sure exactly where it was, I just remember reading it a while back.

They sure do, mine make a noise like a groan or a grunt. It is surprisingly loud(relatively speaking of course)When I take the glass top off for a water change and drop the siphon tube in, the bichirs shuffle and grunt up a storm. I imagine the larger the bichirs, the more noticeable the sound the make.

dang..... a groan huh?? .....sure it wasn't a moan?? lol.

from personal experience, some bichirs will make sounds when taken out of water, particularly LARGE bichirs (22" plus)...... like a squeal..... it's difficult to describe.

They sure do make a sound!!!! Witnessed a PBB, lap, and Faranah Dabola crash through a small opening and fall off near a 6' high top and crash to the floor. The sound they made was awful!!!! :-)

I believe the groan these guys make during a water change is made when they come up to the surface to breathe air....... that's why it's more noticeable with larger bichirs (larger gulps & larger lungs)...... so IMO, it's really not a sound they make per se,...... now the squealing sound I described happens while out of water & it's very trippy to hear..........

I have never heard the squealing sounds, but never really had mine out of water even with tank changes. I notice the groans when I take the glass top off to start a water change. The noise comes when they move and I am sure it is related to the air they gulp, though no air is release to correspond to the noise. It is very noticeable when a couple of the bigger ones are doing it.
