might bet getting some assams in the future but only have 1 tank with a bleheri in it. If i buy 4 sp assams, will the bleheri be ok? or is this a stupid idea lol. thanks

Hi,
what do you mean with mix ? crossbreed ? or stay together peacfully ?

Sp. Assam and bleheri seem to me the most peacful channa I have ever kept.
My first two male sp. Assam lived together with three bleheri in the same tank.
There were no aggression between Assam and Assam , bleheri and bleheri , bleheri and Assam.

But it depends on the moods and charackters of the fish, It can work but it can also fail.

I would not recommend to do it. Even if both species are subtropicals. And its also not sure that they cant crossbreed, whichwe all should prevent.

Cheers

yeah, sorry, just to clarify i meant coexist in one tank :p

I just don't have room to give them each a species tank, and seeing as i only have 1 bleheri (jumped out of holes i did not think was possible) I would rather just keep the bleheris with the sp assams.

Thanks

edit: what problems can occur if they were to crossbreed? why is it important to prevent them from doing so?

Hi chronick. Infertility of the young is the main problem.

I agree with Brucki, keeping a species pure bred is important imo.

I read on a different forum of someone who (unintentionally) crossbred orientalis & gachua, and he said the young were infertile. Which is OK if you only want to keep a single fish, but for some one who does want to breed them can be very frustrating.

Yes you can keep assam and Bleheri together but as with all snakeheads they are usually better in species tanks. They are pretty much the only two you can.

The 'Crossbreeding issue', It's opinion really, some people are for it and some against. I am very against it myself. We should enjoy the species as pure as they are. There would be some immediate difficulties with assam being a mouth brooder and bleheri not so. Thats not to say it would be impossible though.

Yup Bleheri and Assam CAN be put together, as they are both pretty peacfull snakeheads.

The reasons I wouldn't is the cross breeding thought.

But it isn't impossible.
