Have had my indo now for about 3 weeks hes a hider but eats like a pig but no colors yet unless stressed do these fish ever become stable or am i gonna have a grayish black indo dat for life

water quality, tank mates, lighting, food, size of tank, and decorations, all factor into the stablity of Dats. You should read up on what dats perfer in each of these catagories.

Also, their are those random dats, that no matter what you do, they wont get stable.

I've got 10 Indos together and most of them are stable and theres plenty of cover to make them feel secure. If they are happy with there surrondins they will show it.

I have a similar tank...with 10 ITs, and they are stable most of the time. It's usually during things like water changes, tinkering with the filter, or moving something in the tank when I see them lose their stability.

My other dats are pretty much stable all of the time. My large ATs never seem to lose any stability regardless what I am doing...same with my NGTs. My NTTs still lose their stabiltiy at times, but the larger they get, the more stable they are becoming.

So, basically you will probably see you dat stabilize, but it may not be fully stable until it is larger. Adding more dats may help too. They kind of live by the "strengh-in-numbers" motto.

Hope this helps.

I have 2 quite bright lights on my Dat tank and it doesn't bother them. You sound like you have some pretty sweet Dats could you put some pictures up?

Thanks for the info fellas, Hes in my 75 which is a growout with a few perm residents theres a 6.5" syno euruptis a 3" suncat that i doubt he ever sees and a female salvini thats to small for the male right now an a 2.5"" flagtail all keep in there own corners . Does dark substrate have anything to do with it hes on black gravle right now and my 180 has black sand

While it is posisble that fish may change colors to blend in, i do have Dats on black grave, and they are stable. What do you have for filteration? Dats do require very clean water to thrive.

i had a thinbar on black sand and he was almost never stable.
I then mixed his sand with white sand and he is more yellowish brown and when he is stable he is a nice bright yellow. I think it has something to do with substrate but as they get old it wont matter as much

I have a little indo in a tank w/ black gravel,he is nice & stable in color.

I would think its more of a comfort thing then a substrate thing.

This coming from a guy that has only owned Dats for a few months & never anything over 3" in size,so not much experince here.
