hello everyone! i'm new to the site.
i saw some juveniles advertised as endlicheri and they had external gills similar to axotols or young salamanders. are these gills visible on the adults or do they outgrow them? thanks!
steve

no I don't think so....I have yet to see any 5" or larger endli with external gills

They lose them as they grow. Some lose them at early stage and some lose them even at 12". Weeksi, Congicus, Bichir, and Endli are known to have external gill that last longer than any other bichirs species. I've seen endlis in Japan that still have the external gills at 16". However it lost the external gills 4 months later. That was the last news I've heard.

yep, they'll eventually outgrow. My 13" weeksii still has some remaining.

ive had my 13-15 inch endlis keep their external gills at that size.
still long and bushy.
i sold them at that size i wouldnt know when they lost the externals.

I dont know about Endlis, but my 9 inch ornate still has partial external gills. Kind of looks like horns, gotta love it.

none of my bichirs has it besides my 3 inch delhezi

From what I've heard it has a lot to do with your water quality... the better it is, and the better the care of the fish, the longer they have them. I know there's a big fat thread on it somewhere on here if ya feel like diggin.
