 when i noticed that my fish were biting eachother's fins i asked the pet store if fins grow back and they said no they don't. but i just noticed on my pleco that his entire back fin healed after being almost fully "ripped" down the middle vertically. so do fins grow back?

My sailfin had a huge rip in his and now its gone too. Unless someone killed my big boy and replaced him with another just about foot long sailfin then I guess they do!

does feeding them vegetables have anything to do with the rate at which they grow back?
Fins should be able to grow back unless the damage was very severe up to the point that the fins may appear deformed instead.

As to the question quoted above, varied diet does help build up resistance of the fish so in other words, if combined with frequent water changes, the fins are bound to regrow and heal quickly. Stressed and sick fish are more suscpetible to secondary infections than a healthy one.

I had one of my angel fish have his fins ripped off by a power head about 6 weeks ago. Now you can't tell he's even had anything happen to him. I kept the water peramiters constant and with regular water changes, he's back to normal.
