do fire eels get along with other fire eels?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have a 20" fire eel and i just added a 12" fire and the 20" is picking on the 12" should i be worried or will the 20" calm down after a few days?

They usually don't mind others when they're juveniles but as they mature they began to become more solitary. I'd say one eel per tank. But the member MonsterMinis used to keep 3 large fire eels together, you can check it out in the eels media lounge. She mentioned that they would scuffle some, but not too bad. I'd read through her threads! Lots of good advice

He may calm down.. but it worked best for me to have 3. dispersed the aggression of the tank. I would add a separator to the tank and see if the big one calms down. if not i would keep them separated, or add another one between the 2s sizes. I first had 2 fires.. one killed the other, got 2 more and they all managed much better. every now and then they would scuffle. and i have heard of pairs working but imo its hit or miss since its almost impossible to accurately tell male from female. I have kept a few other spineys in 3s that are notoriouse conspecific aggressors as well with questionable success.

Yes, they will eventually kill another spiney if they do not get along.. much like cichlids. I give mine one night. if they don't settle down to a somewhat truce... i separate the next day.

Thanks for the advice. I created a crazy little cave out of flat rock for the small one to hide in. The aggression was mainly after feeding time so ill watch again tonight and see what happens.
