DO FISH SLEEP?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i would say yes..many times i put my lights on at night just to check my fishes and find most of them still in a particular place..obviously the nocturnal ones will be all over the place.but then they tend to sleep during the day

yes they do. you can catch then sleeping in the middle of the night when the lights are out. Sometimes you can see them with a moonlight. They just kinda hoover in one spot. My loaches are always sleeping in the daytime. They lay on their sides until I approach the tank. Kinda funny. Hope this helps.

It really does help! At night my cichlids/arowana are usually less active, my pleco and eel are less active at day (unless its feeding time no one cares what time it is for that!) but come to life at night so there is always something going on in my tank!

So I was curious when I see them less active, are they sleeping or just tired/bored!!! lol

Basically they lack eyelids, so most people think fishes dont sleep. But they do sleep in the night or whenever they feel like. At that time they are helpless ;). So any nocturnal.
can kill em.

That might explain the secret attack last night. Aro was so still I thought he was dead! I went in for a closer look at my tire track eel was prowling about, startled the aro that he did a 360 and grabbed his head! I doubt my eel will attempt that again!

they dont sleep like we do losing consciosness, but they do go through a period of low activity

I had a pacu that would change color when he was sleeping. The first time I noticed I thought he was stressed or something cuz I turned on the light and he was very dark and just floating around kinda bumping into decorations. Next day he was just fine. There were several other occasions where I checked the tank in the middle of the night for whatever reason and he was in the same condition....just kinda floating around and really dark in color.
