I personally have a young flowerhorn who's shown much more kok growth in my 180 then he did in my 55 gallon which was still a lot compared to how it actually shrunk when I put him in a 10 gallon to quarenteen him or again when he started giving my JD problems both of which times his kok seemed to shrink does anyone know the answer here theirs another flowerhorn I've looked into purchasing slightly larger then my fish and the owner said he's had to put him in a smaller separate tank for the past month due to aggression and his kok has gone down in this time I'm inclined to beleive him do to personal experience having this happen but idk I just wanna make sure it's not some weird coincidence with the way mine has grown and this guy just has a small kok flowerhorn other then that the fish looks great I want to pick him up. Any thoughts? Is this an actual occurrence?!?!

Yes. Genetics is number one though. Stress on a fish makes a big difference. Imagine if you lived in a mansion then lost it all to live in a tent. I had a fh given to me that had a huge kok. The size of the kok went down dramatically when I had to house him in a 55. His kok was still pretty big. Though I wonder if the fish I got was fed a high protein/feeders for most of his life? But I would ask for pics of him before he was stuck in the ten gallon.

Also... In your circumstance he was quarantined in a tiny tank which equals stress. Then he had a "dither" which made him feel like a boss... Like the mirror trick. Dominant fish get bigger kok's. I guess it's the same as the fish you want to buy but doubled. Would be nice to get a pic for us to judge it by. Even color can be amplified through basic photoshop/lights.

This is the guy I'm thinking of getting. But I'm not sure now as I might be buying some fish offline and if I go that way I'll be spending all my fish funds

That fish isn't gonna have a huge kok. Look at the start of the hump near the back. It doesn't even have a protrusion. The one I had that had his hump shrink dramatically had a hump way bigger than that one even when it's head shrunk down. It's not a ugly fish, but it can't be considered quality these days (unless it's a female, even then it has a weak flowerline) In this day and age the quality of fh has skyrocketed. I personally would save my money. But if you like the fish that is all that matters.

Yeah I was actually thinking of ordering offline but for 30 on Craigslist I kinda wanted to pick him up
