Hi! I just bought a grammode and it's small probably 1.5 inches. I've heard they grow really really slow. He's the smallest fish in my 100g tank, but seems like he's a survivor so far. How long for him to reach 4 inches? Anybody have pics of their grammodes? I recently discovered this fish and think they look awesome when mature.

ya, they do grow really slow, i think i have noticed mine go from 1" to 1.5" in 4 months, maybe mine is just being stubborn but he has a lot of competition for food, so that is probably also a cause.

In my experience, most of them are simply poor eaters. They'll grab a bit of food and retreat to eat it. If you get a good eater, you should see a decent growth rate.

I agree. They are definitely hit and run eaters. It helps to target feed them large items (like a large pellet of piece of krill) while the other fish get smaller stuff.

A good method is to use feeding tongs to train your grammy to take food directly from you. Eventually, you'll be able to more easily target feed them.

I have the pleasure of growing out several of these beauties and let me say grammodes do seem to growout a little slower than the average cichlid, but i notices they have growing segments/spirts.

yeah mine definitely is a retreater. he eats and hides. but he's also a lot smaller than the other cichlids in my tank. he's the smallest at 1.5 inches and the biggest is a 9 inch flowerhorn if you don't count the 11 inch pleco.

1"-1.5" per year if your lucky!!! Thats my experience with this species. :)
