I know cobra guppies aren't schooling fish, but they do shoal. So do they need their own kind to live happily, or are they fine being the only guppy in the tank?

They are just fine solo as well as in a group. Ya just won't get to see any shoaling/schooling behavior. Honestly imo they great substitutes for Betta fish.
