hi,

i'm waiting for my rbp's to come down, i've sorted my tank out and everything's ready apart from the strong water current but that's in hand, anyway, i've been told that piranhas are jumpers and therefore i should only fill my tank about 2/3 the way up, is this correct because i haven't noticed this being done in the pics or videos i've seen yet?

thanks.

piranhas skittish, yes. jumpers, i dont think so. when they do freak out they dart like crazy sometimes breaking the surface n splashing a lil bit but i never seen them jump or ever hit my lid.

Thats nonsence, not saying it wouldn't ever happen!, but guy's how many threads have you read on this website where you have a member saying Ahh my piranhas have jumped out of my tank and are oin the floor dead ? aro's yes, snakeheads yes even bichirs are known to take a nose dive out of tanks now and then but i have never heard of piranhas doing this !

Also "off topic slightly" how many of you are now searching the forums for "oh my piranha has jumped out of my tank" topic's ... lol theres always gotta be one smart arse looking it up to prove someone wrong !!! :D

mine are jumpers they hit my aquarium top all the time .... i honestly believe they like the bubble i always see them what appears to be biting the bubble on top

I have never heard of a piranha jumping out of a tank as long as the environment is right. I have heard of them jumping out of buckets, not suitable tanks. When they get startled and skitter, they dart around looking for cover. The last thing piranhas want to do when scared is make them selves open by jumping. Instead they seek refuge.

I myself have never seen, had or heard of a RBP jumping out of a tank. Mine are very skittish but don't generally break the waters surface when spooked. With that said I would also say the same of Discus, except I had a discus jump out of a tank.

Most any fish could jump at anytime. Make sure you have a secure lid with little or no escape routes to ensure your fish don't end up out of tank.

just put alot of fake plants as cover, it's better for them they feel more comfortable and they will move around more. Also adding dithers will help.
