Where The Wild Things Are
I got two ornates a few months ago one is growing fast and the other decently. From 5in to 7" and 9". the smaller one has his external grills still. is that normal or is he/she a oddball? pictures will be posted once i can get it out of hiding.

Nothing out of ordinary, it will vary a lot between individuals how long it takes to lose the externals.

I've seen some biig bichirs with stubs of their gills left.

Any Polypterus with a grill should be considered an oddball, even more so if they start cooking their food before they eat it!!
;)

But yeah, seems a little large to have external gills, but they do vary I guess. Post some pics!
