do i have to seel fiberglass, or can i leave it exposed to water if i have a nice thick resin layer on top? i know the fiberglass probably wouldn't have a problem but my concern is if it's fish safe or not?

you should seal it with something will last longer and look nicer...

Yes. From what I was told by a chemist is that most bare fiberglass cloth has something called silanes in it that helps the "wetting" or soak through with the resin. The silanes are harmful to fish.

I havent heard of anyone yet having problems with silanes in the water.

Once fully cured, all fiberglass resins are fish safe. The problem is whether or not the resin will allow water migration. Isophthalic resin will allow water migration and is the culprit of early fiberglass boats delaminating. Orthophthalic resin is the marine grade resin that is impervious to water.
