A while ago i had a problem with marineland stealth heaters they would leak stray voltage in the tank that would actualy cause me a good deal of pain whne i put a finger with an open would or slight cut on it in the tank. A few months later they exploded and nearly heated my tank to 90 degrees luckily no fish losses.

Heaters are easily replaced and that's what i did. Knowing to not go with stealth heaters ever again (notorious for failing with catastrophic results) i decided to go with eheim jaeger heaters which i have found NO complaints about. Well a couple of days ago i noticed a slight stinging pain on my finger (similar to what the stealths used to do) although not as much as with the old heaters it is still noticable. Not wanting to beleive it was the heater i pulled out my dad's multimeter and set it to ac voltage and lo and behold the heater was leaking about 8 volts into the water. But thats not it, to double check i unplugged the heater and the reading dropped from the 24 volts it was at to about 16 the only other electrical device running in the tank was a mag drive pump that has been running for nearly 2 years. So i have a faulty heater and faulty pump but what scares me more is that reputable brand like eheim produced such a sub-par heater

Has anyone else had any trouble with eheim heaters? Have there been any bad batches that my heater may have been part of? Should i try my luck at eheim one more time or go with a different brand ?

it's the new eheim 300 watt heater BTW and i know it's definately not the multimeter either it reads 0 when everything is off or i haven't made a proper path to ground so it's not the multimeter.

if even a reputable brand like eheim is going to fail on me i don't beleive i can trust any aquarium heaters anymore. And why do companies not install a damn ground prong on their heaters so many headaches could be avoided....

You would get the same pain from the electricity without a cut, unless i missed something while reading....

And I would get another eheim. They just dont seem to fail. I think just bad luck. The only time Ive ever had a problem was when a pacu chewed the cord right above the heater and the case filled with water while running. That gave me a nice shock.

No matter what brand, every units should follow strict standards among the aquarists, not just that company's process.
It's sad to know, quality these days are tied to name brands, price and popularity.

try taking the heater to the sink and testing with the meter. is it possible problem lies with the electric outlet or maybe bad powerstrip.
