I currently have a 55g tank with 3 fish. they are all only 1-2" (flowerhorn, texas, and a red pike). I am using the tank as a grow-out tank till whenever it will be necessary to upgrade them to a bigger one. Does anyone think I will need a canister filter for greater filtration right now, or is that something I could wait on given their size? I am assuming that they are expelling minimal ammonia and nitrate levels into the tank. Right now I just have a standard h.o.b. filter that meets 55 gallon filtration. Please let me know. I want to have happy fish, clean water, and great fishy growth! Thanks!

Honestly I dont see the perks of canister filtration, unless your going for a planted tank and dont want to lose co2. A sump in my opinion would be cheaper to make, and provides better bio filtration. Whether you need more filtration depends on your water parameters, and your bioload. You should have no to very little amounts of ammonia/nitrites, and your nitrates should be taken care of with weekly water changes. If you do have alot of ammonia/nitrite you need more biological filtration, and I suggest using a sump as they provide the mose in my opinion. However if your water parameters are fine, I wouldn't bother

2 AC101's....A small Fluval canister would be fine.....But much better(if money is an issue) would be an internal Fluval filter......
