My house is usually dark when my timer shuts the aquarium light off at night. I've heard that fish panic if things go suddenly dark. Should I have some sort of night light or Lunar link light? Thanks.

I use blue lunar light type LED's, and I have the timer shut off the main lights and turn on the LED's for a half hour before shutting everything off. I don't think it's necessary, but my fish seem to like it. It keeps them n a routine schedule, and they seem to really calm down and get ready for nite nite time once the LEDs come on. I know I'd be ticked off if my house suddenly went black at night with no warning, but then again I'm not a fish.

i wouldnt worry to much about going dark, but a drastic change from dark to light is what really freaks out most fish. they dont have eyelids so no squinting for them.

I usually just shut off the tank light and leave the hall light on for a few minutes, then shut it all down. I do the same for the wake up call. Nobody freaks out.

Thanks everyone. I think I will try the Lunar light as my local pet shop sells them and I will be able to watch the fish if I want late at night. This will also stop my wife from laughing her ass off at me for insisting on keeping a light on for my fish!! :)

I used blue led christmas lights - about 25' worth on my 450. They're not super bright, but still illuminate the tank enough to see the fish. I have them come on when the regular lights go out and they stay on for about an hour. I usually spend 15-30 minutes in front of the tank right before I go to bed watching the fish in complete darkness.

I'll probably get proper lunar lighting in time, but for right now, it was an easy $10 fix.

I have a short string of about 35 blue led outdoor christmas lights that I have siliconed to my light fixture...it makes the tank just bright enough for you to see the fish and im pretty sure its not to bright to effect the nocturnal fish....
