I recently changed to sand in my aquarium. I used white play sand. I put prefilters on my aquaclear 110s, because I had read sand would ruin them. I didn't put a prefilter on my reba xp4 or fx5 though. I'm curious if I need to do that. I had noticed sand on top of my powerhead that's under the spraybar for the xp4 so some might be going through. Thanks.

As long as the intake isn't too close to the bottom, you should be fine. Give yourself 2" of space between the sand and intake.

What type of sand, pool filter sand hardly stirs up and shouldnt be a problem but play sand stirs up a lot worse.

I think they're about 4 off the bottom. It's a 210 gallon aquarium that's 29 inches tall so I couldn't even reach that far with the intakes anyways. Thanks for the input.

Do a prefilter, one of my AC's is VERY sensitive to sand being kicked up and starts to buzz and carry on.
