But to OP.....A canister filter is the way to go.
 
I think eventually I will buy one, trying to save money at the moment and didnt want to shell out 200 for a filter. I got ac70 and ac110 off craigslist for 50 bucks total.
 
I would say the Ac110 and Ac70 are more then enough for your tank, though you did not say what type or how much biomedia you are running.

That has kinda been a trial an error with media. On suggestion from a few here. My ac110 has one sponge and two slots of biomax media. Ac70 has one sponge and two levels of biomax media also.

I was thinking i might need some more mechanical, should i add another sponge to the 110 and do 2 sponges with 1 section of biomax?
 
Is the water clear? Or is there always stuff floating in it? It's pretty obvious when you don't have enough mech filtration lol.
