Do i need UGF??

I'm thinking about rebuilding my 55gal reef tank. My old setup was, undergravel filter w/2 Maxi-jet 600s, 1 emperor 400, 1 120gal capable protien skimmer and that's actualy it. Deffinatly not enough filtration!

My thoughts are for the new setup are.. 1 FX5, 1 120gal P/S, and I'm not sure I need/want the UGF.

I was thinking about using the undergravel as a sump of sorts. Maybe putting one big power head on it and plumbing it into a reactor and then a UV. I'm not sure all that is necisary.

Any thoughts?
 
FX5 on a 120 gallon is fine. it's overkill on a 55 gallon. I'm having trouble understanding which one you're putting the FX5 on.
 
It's a 55gal salt.
The 120 is the rated capacity of the protien skimmer. It's a cheep hob instant ocean model.
When I first set up the tank money was a big issue. I came from freshwater when I set it up and had no clue what I was doing.
The 55 is currently broken down into a 29 that is thriving. About a third the tank is liverock and filtration is plenty up to the task. This weekend I'm moving the 55 to another room where it will end up with another 55 stuffed beneath it so I'll be eventually filtering 110gallons with the fx5. Top tank will have loads of rock and coral and the bottom will be more open and set up for something that likes to eat stuff. I mis my old clown knife (8yr wet pet) and want another pet in a tank. I'm thinking a grouper of some sort. I'm planning a whole tank room at my girls place so ill move him into a bigger bette setup later. Just no room now.

Thanks. Nitrates were always a problem in my old setup. I'll ditch it on the reset. Hmmm. Maybe I'll take the eggcrate style UGF, cut it up and build a structure to support my liverock on so I get better caves and hideaways. It's hard to find good liverock around me. The lfs's around here just don't stock it. And it's usually not looking that great. When they do. I'm about an 1.5 hours from that fish place but the phew times I went I just sidewalk like what they had.

In my current 29 I also have a UGF running. Should I just stop running it to limit glow threw the media/crushed coral to limit nitrate production?
