I finally got my 300g up and running. I have added some media (bio balls) from other filters and had it running for 3 days. I was thinking if I removed ALL of the media from 2 wet dry filters in my 150g that has been running for years.
Could I move all the fish from the 150 into the 300?

The more BB you transfer the less the cycle is gonna hurt. Dominate the water changes and you are good to go just monitor.

What I do is squeeze the sponges from established tanks in the new tank load with old rock poop and all (this will help the bb not starve for the couple days with no fish)

Then I stock it up never lost a fish or had a spike to speak of.

If you have the same amount of seeded media and the same bio load(same amount of fish) your tank shouldn't cycle at all... you literally have an established tank.

i'd use the same water also, just to reduce the risk of shocking the fish and BB. Try to PH and temp match with the top up water...

exactly. use as big a quantity of "old" water as possible and you're god to go.

You should not let the cycled media for days in the new tank, because it needs food, and that fod is provided by the fish and their food and their secretions and the ammonia that is in all that....

:iagree: :iagree:

within reason ......as there is also alot of good bacteria which lives inside the tank and not in the filter....if it was me i would also feed easy for the first week to give the bugs a chance to settle in and multiply:popcorn:

"Dirty" substrate from the old tank will feed untill the mess clears enough to put in fish. I usually wait a day or so to avoid any gill damage from particals in the water.

We don't cycle our tanks, we cycle the filter. And if the filter media has bacteria on it good to go.
