This is going to be long... so warning in advance.
Myself and my BF at the time decided one weekend that for date night we would do a combined trip to big Al's and sushi since we live 15 minutes from the Canadian border and therefore 50 miles to the store. Planning ahead we got a bowl out and filled it full of java moss to resell since we planned to buy barbs to bring back.
We got there until nearly closing to buy the fish before finishing up and driving across town to do the late night special at our favorite sushi resturant. Yes we know were cruel, eating all you can eat fish when the fish are waiting in the car but $12 canadian for all you can eat is awesome. We finished up, checked on the fish, and headed back south.
Back to the border with passports in hand ready to give to the man, all the normal questions were asked: where do you live, what did you do, what did you buy, and of course he wants to see the fish. We pull out the bag and find that in the last 30 minutes the fish have filled the bag with poop rather well, have lost most of their shiney green coat and worst of all... the bag is wet on the outside.
The border guards eyes buldge, he tells us we go home NOW to take care of our poor baby fish that are leaking. Yeah, he didn't look at the passports. That was beside the point at that moment, I jetted out there pushing past the speed limit all the way home worried about the long term effect this stress would cause.
We pull into the parking lot and pulled the java moss bowl out that had the barbs bag in it since we left big Al's then finally stopped and thought about it. The bowl had water in it for the moss, the fish bag got put in the bowl at the resturant. The car moved the remaining water around on the bag. The bag was wet when we pulled it out at the crossing.
Then we just had to laugh standing outside with the fish, all 5 fish ended up living for quite a long time after.
