I got five Vieja Fenestratus Lago Catemaco at 3inches in a shipment yesterday. I was expecting to receive the calico/orange bodied fish I see some members have on here. I was basically expecting midas type colors on a vieja body. One of the five fish was orange, like I expected, the other four are gray/brown fish - really drab looking. Do these fish fade at some point like some midas or red texas fry or are they born with adult coloration?

I purchased two of these at 2" many months ago. One of them peeled/faded to white/orange and the other has the more typical fenestratus colors. The are both in the 6" to 8" range. It is my understanding that not every fish will peel/fade from this strain - only a portion will. By the way these guys are really mean!!!

Good to know - I didn't know they would peel. I was expecting all orange fish & what I netted out of that bag of blue water was not what I expected...

They should peel but some do not. I usually ask for one already peeling. I have a 8" one i bought at 1" and never peeled. At the same time ive received 2" catas already peeling.

Mine started out at 3" with a dark horizontal stripe. The stripe peeled away completely at about 5 inch, but still retains some shading bloches like an OB Zebra. In comparison, the normal fenestratus behind it has no peeling. I am not sure if it will continue to peel off more or that is it.

Nice fish tiger15. That's what I like about this type of fenestratus, it has a completely different coloration/look from all other viejas. I'm working on a vieja community tank and wanted something that looked a little different in there.
