does anyone know if fs have import license?
or are they buying from someone who has import license and arleady import the fish?
i'm not familiar with the whole process, i am looking to see if they do so maybe i can ask them to order some fish direct for me and see what their markup is

most buy from big wholesaler fish distributors that have import license. some of the more specialized stores or vendors on this fourm have import licenses to get in the rare stuff.

From a legal view, they should not. It is "illegal" for a retail operation, in any business, to bypass wholesaler/distributors. Is it enforced? No. Do people do it? Yes.

Most LFS do not have an importer's license nor do they have any interest in having one.

There used to be an LFS here that would fit into the scenario. The owners also owned an import/wholesale operation. They sold livestock and dry goods through the import/wholesale operation to all the LFS and undercut them in their two LFS locations.

What this is not true at all. If your saying a company like PEPSI has deal with distributor/wholsaler to sell his product in certain area and a consumer gets it from another company not including supermarket, deli etc that is not a licensed distributor/wholsaler then yes the company who is not licensed to sell the product is breaking the law. But in fish business there is nothing like this so no one is breaking any laws.

I think what he is getting confused with is that typically importers and wholesalers will not sell to private individuals. This is because their main customers (LFS) will get TOed and refuse to do business with them.

IDK he said from a legal stand point not just bussiness ethics view.

Not in this country. The distribution system is a matter of convienence for manufacturers to get their product to numerous small retailers. An exclusive manufacturing contract is just one example where the wholesalers can be bypassed all together. Large retailers deal directly with manufacturers.

You stated your assumption as a fact, and now you have everyone in a tiz.

You can try asking. I asked one LFS owner 1 time and he told me he doesnt get anything special, that I should look online. Theres this other LFS that maybe have an import license too because they say they can get you fish if they dont have it stocked.

You can make a request for a certain fish and they will try and get it. They have a really good stock too all the time for oddballs and other stuff you dont see often or in other LFSs.
