I'll randomly see large old looking jack dempseys at LFS' and they'll bang on the glass pretty aggressively. They could have been raised solo their entire life or do males get more aggressive the older they get??

typically, they get meaner as they hit matury. But ime you can tell from a youvhad age if you're gonna have a bastard for not.
My first Jack Dempsey was pretty calm. He only live about 7 months through.
My current Jack demspey, who is about 2", is pretty territorial already.

My male JD did. He was very peaceful until one day he snapped. But when cichlids get pretty old (over 10 years old) they seem to get less aggressive. I had a really aggressive male convict that got really mellow after owning him for 12 years. He died at 15.

IMO I think the main issue is they claim more territory as they get older and the tanks we keep them in are smaller than the territory they're claiming. I've seen numerous big dovii living somewhat peacefully with midas, jags, etc in a huge aquarium. Your going to have the psycho's no doubt, but for the most part from what I've seen it's tank space.

Of course all bets are off when breeding.

When I come up to the tank mine will usually rush up to me flared up from under his rock.Sometimes he will run and hide and sometimes wag like an oscar begging for food. Moody 8" guy.
