Do microbes die or go dormant?

If you have media that is well established what happens if it gets dried our?
When it dries, does it kill all the microbes, or do they go dormant and come back when wet?

I have a bucket of gravel from an old aquarium that dried out. I am going to use it as media in a 5 gallon canister filter. I was wondering if any of the old bacteria would still be viable, or if I have to inoculate it with new?
