My 20" arowana just fully recovered from hitting his head on the tank lid last month and tonight he fully jumped out of the tank for the first time. I was hanging something up in my room and my arowana got spooked and bolted out of the tank. I have glass lids on my tank with about 2" of clearance in the back for canister filters inlets/outlets etc. I turned around right away when I heard the initial bang and saw him push the back half of the lid up and off the tank. Flopping around on my carpeted bedroom floor for a good 2 minutes before I was able to grab a towel and get him back into the tank. Blood all over the wall and tank stand and he lost a nice chunk off the top of his head. Large scales left on the tank floor and now there is a lot of stuff shedding off of him but I'm not sure what it is...

Besides time anything I should do to help him heal? I turned the lights off and he seems to be swimming okay now he was swimming erratically right after, probably in shock.

and I guess my point in making that title is believe what people say. I know arowanas are jumpers I've seen pictures of large ones dead because they jumped but I never thought it would happen to me. Thankfully I was there when it happened. My Marineland double bright LED light was def not gonna weight down the glass tops enough to hold him in I need to find a way to better secure him in there so this does not happen again. It's going to be months until he fully heals if he does.

yeah, seems like just when you get them healed up, they jump again. probably the #1 reason for most aros deaths is jumping out. just keep him well fed and the water clean is about all you can do. watch for any fungal infections. best of luck with your aro, they ALL jump. just wait till your aro is over 30" and decides to leap. I easily lose 5g of water from a single splash.

to keep him in the tank I have plexi tops so he can't break the lights and a heavy oak canopy ontop. definitely don't slack on a proper lid for these guys!

thanks for the feedback guys. Crispy, that was my biggest concern due to the missing scales...infection. I know like the last time even though it was minor in time the wounds will heal but I'm afraid those open wounds will progress to something else. My mom has had it with my tanks after this one now the entire house spells like fish haha.

Is it safe to say the stuff flaking off my aro could be slime coat of some sort? Lot of crap floating around the water clogging up my FX5 and 405 inputs now.

thanks...appears to be doing okay this morning. no erratic swimming but I'm very hesitant when walking by my tank now. Aro has always been skittish but last night surprised me never had a real jump attempt like that only a couple minor bangs.

bastard jumped AGAIN tonight. I was a lot more relaxed this time and I knew he would stop jumping around on the floor as soon as I put a towel on him but still beat himself up more than he did last night.
