Almost in every topic on cycle someone will suggest picking up a couple of feeder goldfish and cycling the tank with them, I have tried to correct people in the past but once the next topic on cycle appears someone still throws in the goldfish deal.

DO NOT USE GOLDFISH TO CYCLE YOUR FISH TANK!

There are generally two big reasons why you should not do it:
First your tank will generally be setup for tropical fish, while Goldfish would need completely different care such as lower temperatures and high pH – Goldfish are susceptible to disease in a tropical environment!
Second Goldfish that people buy to cycle the tank are usually feeder Goldfish. Same idea applies why you should not feed your fish Goldfish applies to this – in stores they are kept in horrible conditions (500 feeders in a 33 long tank is what my local store does) and are not really cared for which means there are all kinds of diseases and parasites going around. Once you introduce those feeders into your tank whatever disease they have may catch on to your filter and in result kill your fish.

Here are some references that explain this in more detail and some provide other reasons:
Some Reasons Not to Use Goldfish to Cycle Your Tank
Nitrogen Cycle (small section on it)

If you need more information, use Google, it is easy to find information on this subject.

Yeah, but I thought that the salt bath before you dump them into the tank would take care of the parasites.

I know pet supermarket overcrowds the goldfish feeder tanks, but at least they have chillers hooked up to them.

I doubt that many people would actually quarantine those feeders for a couple of days before using them. Also there are 8 fish stores I visit (I am in NYC, we got more but I do not bother with them), not one of which has a chiller on the feeder tank(s).

I didn't quaratine my feeders, I just gave them a 15 minute salt water bath. I know there's still a risk, but the risk is reduced by buying them from a chilled tank and them giving them a salt bath before adding them to the tank. I'd still be pretty pissed if it contaminated my new tank.

I use my little sister 2.5 gal tank to quarantine my feeders :)

As for cycling with feeders... I have had no problem with them, them seem fine to live in a tropical enviornment for the time being.... until they become.... a snack ;)

Also the pet store near my house has excelent feeder fish, Not once have I gotten a dead or diseased fish. But petsmart on the other hand.... I bought some feeders from petsmart and 3 of them were dead when I got home, the other all had fin rot and even ich! :WHOA:

This is the same as people who feed their fish feeders on regular basis, it does not necessarily mean that your fish will get diseased but there is always a chance. You can cut down that risk greatly by picking up some $.50-1.50 fish, couple of bucks is not a big deal especially if you expect to keep some expensive fish.

i always cycle with some convicts my lfs sells them for 96cents a piece so pick up 20 or so and they arent quite as boring as goldfish either.....they are fun to watch grow and fight....in fact i got 20 the other day for my 150g

:iagree: anything but goldfish , tetra's , small convict's , if able to catch wild fry from river or stream.. anything but goldfish.... :D

Vitaliy, can you list which 8 stores you go to?

I live in NYC also and would like to know the better stores.

Right now, I only get fish from Fishtown.

I live in Brooklyn and I only visist stores in Brooklyn. The only three worthy stores are:
Brooklyn Aquarium Inc
339 9th St, Brooklyn, NY
(718) 499-1483
Brooklyn Aquarium Inc is dirty as hell but they always have awesome Cichlids, usually stuff you can not find anywhere else. Also you will come across a ray or an aro once in a while.
and
World Class Aquarium
2015 Flatbush Ave, Brooklyn, NY
(718) 258-0653
World Class Aquarium are a bit more pricey but they always have very healthy stock! Whenever I am there someone is always doing water changes, I do not think I have seen one dead fish in this store. They will have some awesome looking Discus, Angels, time to time rays, Frontosas, etc.. They got this what looks like 180+ monster tank with bunch of huge Cichlids, they got this one male Red Devil that is way over a foot long! Also they got an awesome policy in exchanging fish or if you are trying to trade in your fish for something else.
Fish Expo
2370 Nostrand Ave, Brooklyn, NY
(718) 253-6400
Owner was always an ass to me, ****ty policies as far as returning fish, or trading in fish (basically they never do it). But they have basically the best African Cichlids in whole Brooklyn. They had this young guy working there, cool guy always loves to yap about fish.

I think those are the only three stores I would buy serious fish from. The rest are Petlands (I think there are around 6 driving distance from me alone!) and other crap along those lines.
