I've heard of some big guapotes that are aggressive and some that are passive such as dovii's and jags. Do the passive ones ever come out of their shell or would they stay permanently chill? Any stories? =]

Its impossible to generalize, every fish will behave differently (even of the same species).

:iagree:

All fish have there own persoinalites

yes they really do come outta their shell the best way is to have large clumps of plants as well as dither fish( these include tetras, barbs, danios, silver dollars, and other small schooling fish) this is also depending on the type of cichlid..so go wit size other then that yur fish should get used to his surroundings just like a new dog in a house

If you're keeping a RD/Midas, I'd advise on never keeping dither fish (OF ANY KIND) at all. If they arn't big enough to fit in their mouth, they will become a "Plaything" to toy with and eventually they will become dinner. I have NEVER had any luck with dithers and large Guapote cichlids. Might as well, just buy live food instead of dithers because IMO it would be the same thing and they do nothing to ease shy cichlids in my experience. I feel the same way about Plecos and Rd/Midas as well, and I'll stand by my opinion to the very end.

I like them, but have had nothing but bad experiences with them with fish that grow faster then they do. They are fine with goldfish, community tropical fish, africans and smaller cichlids, but Ive never kept one that didn't die within a year. Who knows if these fish even eat the algae wafers you throw in the tank at night? For all I know, the other fish could be eating thier food when the lights are out? Maybe all my plecos starved to death or got killed. I'll never know. Either way, I won't be keeping plecos with large cichlids ever again.
