do live plants in an aquarium help add dissolved oxygen back into the water and help fish breath better?

yes, plants release o2 during photosynthesis

ok so not that that's giving me a free card to overstock my aquarium (i do want to take good care of my fish) but doesnt that mean that if i had an overstocked tank (even slightly) it would help a great deal make up for the large amount o2 being used up by those fish? i just want to clarify to help assure me that im not hurting my fish.

my tank is pretty fully stocked at the moment and id like to another fish (or 3) to it to top it off. also, wouldnt the excess amounts of co2 being breathed out by the fish be useful as a substitute for having a co2 injection system? my only concern with that, apart from not having the right ratio of fish to plants, is that the fish will continue respiration even at night while the plants arent using co2, which possibly could cause an unsafe buildup every night and potentially result in pH swings. a cansiter injection system counteracts this by having an auto timer shut off for night time use (which is why i dont want to use a fermentation tank).

i dont think that plants do that much to adding O2... unless you have your tank stuffed with plants and a sump w/ lots of plants, i dont see that it makes that much of a difference. i think that having plenty of surface agitation would be more beneficial

its a 20 long. the stocking list goes like this: 1 betta, 9 ember tetras, 9 black kuhli loaches, 4 corys, and a banjo catfish.

i want to add at least 1 yellow tail zig zag eel and if i can get away with it id like to actually 1 or 2 peacock eels and 1 or 2 zig zags.

ill get a picture up in a second
