Do Poly's breath exclusively from the surface...

I think they need it and not just want it. Yes, those bigger ones do breath from the surface as well.
 
bichirs aquire approx 40% of their O2 intake from atmospheric O2 and depending on how active they are may surface for air more frequently.P.senegalus according to test results as they age depend more and more on atmospheric O2.
 
actually it should be bagged and the bag about half filled with water the other half pure O2

This is cool information I didn't know they needed to breathe from the surface. I thought they could if they wanted to, but surfacing not absolutely required to survive. So just to make sure I understand this right, that means if a bichir for some reason were not able to reach the surface, it would drown?
 
I enjoy seeing them do that and after they eat and full I see them go up for air .
