Do polys external gills grow back?

I got a small teug about a moth ago at three inches with no external gills and now a month later and at 3.5- 4 inches there seems to be small external gills growing back in? Is this even possible and is it common?

It can come back in times. or when the water conditions are bad. The gills are extra breathers for bichirs.

I knew that they came and went but ive never had a poly this size with them, I worry about him lol. Water quality is definatly not an issue.
