I just came into posession of a 29-36g tall octagon tank.
I was wondering if anybody had kept a puffer in an octagon. I know footprint is essentially all that matters but puffers have unusual swim patterns that might utilize the height of the tank more effectively.

I saw a mekong river puffer around 1.5" for a good price and was wondering if itd be suitable.

What are the dimensions?
In a standard 36, I wouldn’t put anything bigger than 3-4 inches in. Bigger for the sedentary puffers.
I’d imagine with a tall tank and not much space you are limited to a carinotetranodon species.

Murder beans (pea puffers) would work. I would not use for any of the larger puffers as they really need more space to feel comfortable. MBs max out at 1in so a school of 7-12 would work if added at the same time.
You need to plant the tank heavily too. A nice large clump of Java moss will add a spawning ground as well.

Wouldn’t go bigger than a dwarf puffer or a redeye. Anything else is just too big or too active.

Ive had too many pea puffers to be interested in that. And previousy had a red eye who did well in a small tank.

The general consensus is that a mekong spotted puffer gsp and figure 8 are too big?

I think i may just get the mekong because it looks so similar to a spotted congo and are being sold at 1.5".

10 gallons per inch of puffer a good rule of thumb?

It’s not about gallonage as it is footprint in this case. 18 inches just doesn’t give much space for any but the really small puffers.
It depends a lot on species as far as the rule goes. Active puffers like amazons will need a lot more running room than the similarly sized fig 8.
