ich affects scaled fish, rays have no scales

Don't think this statement is 100% true... Clown Loaches don't have scales n get Ich fairly easy. Just my observation

My statement may not be 100% true but yours is 100% wrong. Clown loaches do not have scales on their heads but do on their bodies. They are also known for being particularly susceptible to ich. ( just my use of google)

Ich only effects scaled fish?

I have had puffers with Ich before, and they don't have scales.

Has anyone ever scraped tissue samples of a the rays spiracles or gills? Probably not on MFK, unless of course your one of the educated elitists.. I don't see why the Ich parasite couldn't heavily effect the softer gill tissues of rays while their exterior is not a viable hosting location for the parasite.

A recent gill scraping sample of a large deceased royal pleco (panaque family of plecos with heavily armored scales) revealed that the gill tissue was heavily infected with Ich although the fish itself showed no signs of the parasite due to the heavy armored scales. It was almost comical that this "supreme mystery death" was caused by what some might call the common cold of aquarium fish. It's nice to have someone in the local community with a scope and knowledge of fish disease. :)

Ich can effect fish with or without scales. That doesnt have anything to do with it.

Anything i have read has said rays cannot get ick.. no reason has been given...

Even rays kept in heavely infested tanks, have not gotten the ick that was on every other fish. With that said, i have never seen/heard of a ray with ick.. so perhaps this is an accurate find.

My guess would be that a rays exposed skin on its back is not ideal for ick.. being too tough of a surface to penetrate perhaps.

While the underbelly of the ray would be perfect for ick, my guess there would be that the ray rubs the ick off from gliding around on its belly.

While I agree that I spoke in haste about scaled fish and Ich, Is there ANY fish that has scales on its eyes?
Have you seen Ich on a ray's eyes?
