I bought a poly senegalus 2 months ago. He was very small, and compared to the sen he was kept with was about 1/3 the size. The fish were supposedly the same age. Now i've read that tank bred sens can grow as slow as 0.5" a month, but i went back to the store i bought mine from and that one is about 6" now, while mine is maybe 3/3.5". Im wondering is it possible i have a runt? I mean i dont mind if i do cuz he can be my mini predator lol, but im just curious if its possible. Hes living in a 10g for now because the fish in my 90 will eat him if i put him in (a tiger oscar) but he loves massivore pellets and has gotten pretty chunks

Yes, it's possible. Runts do exist in every batch of fry.

Technically there are runts but you more often find variations such as SB. But the genes in cb sens are starting to get pretty bad (IMO) so usually the growth rates are slow and the max sizes are small such as 8-10" max. Then agains we also have pet stores that take poor quality care of their polys and they get their growth stunted

Runts absolutely exist. At least 95% of all sens you find in lps are mass bred CB sens. They are bred by the ten of thousands. i've had a CB sen that did grow an inch for 6 months. Then it died for so apparent reason.

Holy cow. Well lets hope mine only stays a midget and avoids the no reason death :s im sorry to hear that though

Thanks. I'm not saying CB sens are going to die for no reason. Mine just ended that way. Just expect your sen to have a crazy slow growth rate if indeed it's a CB.

As another note, CB sens can sometimes have a normal growth rate like their wild counterparts. Only the highest grade CB ones though.
We Canadians get some of the crummiest of the CB sens. lol. Might be just my location.

Any fish that has been overrated is easily mass produced without due regard to genetics. I always find these to be the ones to end up stunted most.

is there anyway of knowing if i have a high grade sen?

usually all chain petstores only sell CB sens. Usually the WC sens are listed. IMO, the dull coloured sens that have deformed fins are mass bred.
