Not sure if this is the correct section but I've been trying to collect my own SW fish in FL as of late with hand net while snorkeling, cast netting and seining the grass beds with mixed success. Would it be worth my $ to get a slurp gun? I don't think you can use a trap and a cast net would get torn up on the jetties.

Where in Florida are you collecting? If you are in the Daytona to Cocoa area, let me know. (If you are in the Panhandle area, I can donate some degreaser. :D )

Slurp guns are cool and frustrating at the same time. They do work but it takes practice and patients. My brother and I caught some fish with one a long time ago in the Keys and out of Ft. Lauderdale. Scuba gear is nice but if you are in the shallows, snorkling works ok.

If you have a small mesh cast net, see about getting into the tributaries and/or intercoastal areas. Target floating weeds. It gets messy but you'll find tons of cool tiny fish hanging out under the weeds. I've caught some baby Seargent Majors, triggers, pipefish, puffers, and tons of others that have gone unidentified.

Although I don't really like to support the illegal collection of fishes, I am told that slurp guns are often more trouble than they're worth.

Also, I personally have never been stopped by fish & wildlife during my collections, but my friends have. We all have permits so it isn't a problem, but it does happen. Be careful.
