I bought 2 tiretrack eels and one is missing about an inch off its tail. It appears to be growing back but I've only had it for a couple of days so it's hard to tell. Was just going to buy one but I felt bad for the other (plus they were pretty cheap). lol Anyways, do they actually grow back or is it just the way it was taken off that makes it look like it is?

i have had a lot of fish loose part of their caudal fins. Their ability to regenerate has always amazed me. Even had a south american lung fish loose pretty much the last 1/3 of his body, just shy of the anus. All of it grew back.

Hmm... I wonder if that goes for the eels as well. The eel's tail is looking pretty gross now. I'm not sure if it is infected or just growing back.

Hard to tell from this angle, but it looks like a significant amount is gone. Looks like muscle not just fin?

O

It's hard to tell from that angle but I agree that it looks like muscle tissue. The eel appears to be in rough shape as well. Hopefully he recovers. Add some salt to the tank to help the healing.

May i ask what happened here, this looks crazy to someone thats not used to eels. It looks like it was chopped off?
I hope it gets better :D

Sorry forgot to update this. The eel did not make it. It wouldn't eat anything and it's tail almost looked like it had fungus on it. Poor thing.

I got it from the pet store like that. I figured it had a better chance in my understocked 80 gallon then it did in the overstocked 20 at the store. The only thing I couldn't understand is what in the tank there would have done this. There was small angels, two eels, a couple of tiny id sharks, and a bunch of miscellaneous small bottom feeders. Maybe they had sold or moved the fish that did it. On a positive note, the other one I got from them has almost doubled in size and they gave me a full refund. Still feel bad for the fish.
