They list them as being for a particular size tank like for example

The hydro pro III is for 40 gallons and the whisper air pump is for 40 gallons

Does this count towards gallons per hour like a regular filter ?

GPH is the flow of the water, only one part of the equation. Sponge filters have very little flow if air driven, though you can increase the flow by using a powerhead.

sponge filters do more in terms of adding more places for beneficial bacteria to grow.they work well in fry/baby tanks.also i use them instead of airstones, good as backup to your main filters,if they happen to lose BB

I took the sponge off the the Hydro Sponges and have been using them as bubbler, they look and work great in this manner. I was thinking of using my canister filter for purely biological and then put the sponges back on the tubes to maybe polish water ? I have an Aquaclear HOB as well but want to remove the biological in there and use it only for mechanical. Should I put the sponges back on or just leave them as they are. As a bubbler they agitate the water very nicely. From what I researched, sponge filters are mainly for biological but I won't be needing that with the canister.

sponge filters are good water polishers, as far as flow rate you might be getting 50 or so gph with a good air pump
