Do stingrays have to have sand or is eco complete ok

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I would say so! They like to bury themselves in the sand. Make sure the sand isn't sharp! Is your rays belly red? pics?

Sorry just saw you "wanted" a ray lol thought you just ran out and bought one. Sand all the way I use Estes sand I'm sure others will chime in on ray safe sands

Eco complete is definitely a little too rough. I use Caribsea's super naturals. I would steer away from the Tahitian moon though. That's more like a blasting sand. I try to stay away from any silica sand to avoid any abrasions, especially with younger rays.

Changing substrate is a easy job

I removed 200lbs from my tank and put new sand in within 5 hours

Just use a big hose and drain into a sack the sand stays in the sack the water goes down the drain

Easy

I use the carib sea tahitian moon and no probs at all. Its actually for rays. That and the sunset gold is beautiful too.

Although Tahitian moon may work for rays (i myself used it for about a year with 2 retics) it is not ideal, nor is it made for rays. It is a crushed volcanic rock that can irritate sensitive bellies. It is also magnetic (drop an old mag cleaner on it). That led me to call carib and find out what's what with that substrate. They gave me the exact answer I imagined. It'll work, but its defininitely not the best. I then purchased a pup who became seriously irritated by the sand and have since switched to sunset gold. Just my .02 or maybe .10 :)

I use a fine gravel from red flint quarry ect... most the lfs here sell it by the lb... Its a step above their sand grade... never had an issue w/ my rays or spiney eels on it. also doesn't kick up like some finer sands do. I actually take a tablespoon or so wet it in your hand.. and rub your hands together... If it cuts you up w/ "regular preassure" I don't use it... and i'm a chick so I'm not talking trying to make fire.. just rub it together and see if it bothers your skin.
