Just wondering if stingrays need sand or substrate to burrow in or will a bare bottom tank suffice. If you can tell me the benifits and disadvantages of both it would be greatly apriciated:)

they dont need sand, but i feel that it offers them a place to bury themselves in when they are getting used to the tank. a young stingray wont need much sand at all if you decide to use it. def use sand, avoid gravel as a substrate

hey varial just some pointers for you is that in your case you need to learn everything there is to know about rays being you are going to be selling them and giving people the wrong info if your not studied up. you need to spend a few days using the search function and reading the stickies. people look to you for good advice and as with two of my lfs they gave me all the wrong advice starting with a 55 is big enough for a ray among other things. no wonder they couldnt keep a ray alive for long.

i cant stress it enough is research research research. we are counting on you so the person that buys from you if joining this site comes in with some knowledge and not coming in with undersized tanks and bad ideas. maybe even tell them when they are looking at your rays to check this site out or do research themselves so you can ask a few basic questions and make sure they are ready with correct tanks and good info. a dead ray makes no one happy but a living one brings alot of joy.

im not tryen to be a dick im just sayen know what you are selling. and use the search function and read the stickies maybe even print some stuff out for your employees. almost all of your questions have already been answered ten different ways. so read up and welcome to mfk and the ray addiction.

sand is something that makes them feel safe and comfortable that what they use in the wild not just sand but that is the main sorce you can use other substrates. if you just have a bare bottom tank then the stingray cant hide itself if feels threatednd or stresssed.

I spoke to a few breeders that recomend bare bottom tank. However what you are saying makes alot of sense. I will have to level out the pros and cons of sand or no sand to make the desition that will be best for the stingrays health. Thank You:)

Varial, I think you have a very healthy attitude and wish all LFS were like you.

You could just have some sand at one end but be warned they do push it all over the place, you do not need it very thick and if you have it too thick then pockets of dead water can form and cause detrimental bacteria.

Keep it vacuumed

Good Reply, I was tempted to say the same but I fear I have a reputation for arguing already on here.....glad to see the other argumentative fellow chimed in instead of me..:D

For the record we normally argue against each other so it must be wonderful advice when we agree LOL
