Is the hiding spots really necessary in keeping these little guys alive? I was told that it is recommended because it keeps them from getting stressed. I have been seeing many setups and videos with people just doing bare bottom and no hiding spots.

My setup: 10 gallon tank, whisper hang on back filter, Sponge filter, gravel, one driftwood with hiding spots underneath, and that is all that is in the tank.

You don't need hiding spots. I used to put lots of driftwood and rocks for the dats to hide in, and as expected, all they did was hide.

Now I just have a fake plant and 1 rock in a bare bottom 60 g and all my dats swim around the top and middle of the tank. They're very active and I think not having hiding spots is part of the reason.

You also might try increasing the temp. I have my dats tank at 87 and it makes them a lot more active than when I kept dats at 78-80 degrees.

60g vs 10g? That's a big difference there as far as space to run away from being attacked.

By the way, the tank only has datnoids in it. There are no other tankmates.

best to have hiding spots so they will be less stress
